Domain Forwarding

If the Basic or Standard Web Hosting Account meets your needs but you would still like the advantage of having your own domain name without the added cost of an Advanced Web Hosting account, the domain forwarding may be a solution.

Domain forwarding (also called URL forwarding or domain redirection) is a service offered by most domain name registrars at a small additional cost over the basic domain name registration service.

An example of a domain that uses domain forwarding is The Illinois Club: http://www.theillinoisclub.org. This points to The Illinois Club pages located on Prairienet.

Most registrars will give you two options:

  • the 'persistent URL' or 'URL keeper' option, where the domain name remains in the browser's address bar. This option is perhaps less convenient for users since it doesn't let them bookmark individual pages.
  • simple forwarding in which the actual URL will show up in the browser's address bar

What next?

If you haven't registered a domain name yet, be sure to choose a registrar that offers domain forwarding. Once your new Prairienet Web site is up and running, you can log into your account at the domain registrar's site and select domain forwarding so that it points to your site on Prairienet. Your Prairienet URL will be http://www.prairienet.org/mynewsite. That's all there is to it!
