Email Routing Options: Forwarding and Email Aliases

There are various options for handling your account's email. You can use Prairienet's Webmail, set up your own email program, even use Linux-based PINE on Prairienet Classic. Classic.

Sometimes you may find it more convenient to route email from your Prairienet account to another email address.

Email Forwarding

You can have your Prairienet email to any other valid email addresses. We are not set up in a way that allows members to make these changes themselves, so please email Member Services with the specifics.

Email aliases

Older Web hosting accounts were numbered xx---, e.g. xx999. An easy to remember email alias was set up for these accounts so that instead of emailing, for example, xx999@prairienet.org, people could send email to alpha-omega@prairienet.org.

Organizations that have Advanced Web Hosting accounts and their own domain name may request aliases based on their domain name, for example, reference@urbanafreelibrary.org. These aliases can then be set to route to any valid email address. Please email with the specifics.

We do not have the capacity to create actual mailboxes for virtual domains. However, most email programs can be configured so that your recipients will see your email alias in the From: line.

Options for accounts using domain forwarding

Organizations that are using the economical domain forwarding option should check with their domain name registrar, most offer POP mailboxes for low annual fees.
